Where our figures come from.

An overview of the institutes, publications and organisations Zeehond.org draws on — with the type of information we get from each one.

Research & counts

  • Wageningen Marine Research (WMR) — Annual seal counts in the Dutch Wadden Sea and the Delta, carried out from aircraft. WMR provides our population figures and trends. Source for: counts, grey seal population.
  • Trilateral Wadden Sea Secretariat / Common Wadden Sea Secretariat (CWSS) — Joint NL/DE/DK counts and the Wadden Sea Quality Status Report. Provides the international context for our populations. Source for: Wadden Sea, protection.
  • Compendium voor de Leefomgeving (CLO) — Official Dutch indicators for, among other things, seal populations. Source for: counts.
  • SCOS / Special Committee on Seals (UK) — International reference for grey seal research; relevant because the Dutch population is part of the North Sea metapopulation.

Policy & protection

  • Ministry of LNV / Dutch national government — Legal frameworks (Environment and Planning Act, formerly Wnb) and Natura 2000 implementation. Source for: protection.
  • The Dutch Seal Agreement (2020) — The full agreement and its implementation frameworks. Source for: seal warden, rehab, seal pup found.
  • Wadden Sea Seals Agreement (Bonn Convention) — The treaty framework for trilateral seal protection.
  • Rijkswaterstaat — Official tide tables and water levels. Source for: tides.

Nature organisations & rehab

  • Zoogdiervereniging — The Dutch mammal society; species profiles and behavioural descriptions.
  • Natuurmonumenten and Staatsbosbeheer — Managers of much of the Wadden and Delta areas; information on access rules and seasonal closures.
  • Zeehondencentrum Pieterburen — Research and rehabilitation centre in Groningen; information on rehabilitation procedures and pup-assessment criteria.
  • Ecomare (Texel) — Rehab and education; information on Wadden Sea seals and boat trips.
  • A Seal (Stellendam) — Rehab for the Delta; relevant data on the Zeeland population.
  • RTZ Termunten — Eems-coast rehab.
  • IFAW Netherlands — International animal welfare organisation; background on threats.
  • WWF / Wereld Natuur Fonds — Marine-related material.

Scientific literature & encyclopaedias

  • Reijnders et al., population research on seals in the Wadden Sea (peer-reviewed).
  • Brasseur et al., IMARES/WMR reports on seal counts and behaviour.
  • Härkönen et al., PDV outbreaks in the North Sea (1988 and 2002).
  • NPRC / DWHC — Dutch Wildlife Health Centre; diseases and causes of death in seals in the Netherlands.
  • IUCN Red List — International species status.
  • Wikipedia (NL + EN) — Used for the overview of species worldwide and basic encyclopaedic facts, always cross-checked against a primary source.

How we deal with uncertainty

Counts are snapshots with built-in uncertainty: an aerial count only captures the animals that are on the sandbar at that moment, and even standardised correction factors differ between sources. When two reputable sources differ significantly in a figure, we give a range or quote the most recent official figure with a date. Pages with population figures are checked at least annually after the official counts.

Spot something missing? A mistake?

We are continually expanding this list. If you want to report a missing source or an error, you can reach us via the contact page. We process corrections as quickly as possible, with a note on the affected page.

Read the work the sources are drawn from

Our pages with figures explain directly which source we used for which piece of information.
